COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented global crisis. Caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, China, and has since spread globally in a matter of weeks, exhibiting extreme contagiousness.
An appropriate, coordinated response to the threat necessitates worldwide interdisciplinary cooperation to better characterize the pathogenesis, natural history, prognosis, and management of the disease.
Experts from all over the world work tirelessly around the clock to provide clinicians with relevant, high-quality medical literature and guidelines. Although crucial to understanding disease pathogenesis, the ultramicroscopy of viral pathologic changes in COVID-19 represents a current gap in research.
In alignment with global efforts and as part of the commitment of the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure to providing up-to-date quality medical research, I am pleased to introduce this special issue titled, “COVID-19 under the Lens.”
In this issue, we deal with important topics including pharmacologic agents currently under trial, mechanisms for streamlining hospital and pharmacy workflows in a pandemic context, and the role of artificial intelligence in combating the pandemic.
We have also devoted a section aiming to exchange experience among academics regarding the effect of the pandemic on changing practices in medical education.
Best wishes
